Eco-Friendly Tile Market + LIVDEN Sustainable Tile

As we become more aware of the impact that our lives can have on our communities and our planet, more of us are making the choice to go green.

You have made the switch to reusable shopping bags and bamboo straws, but where do you go from here?

We, as a society are starting to examine every choice we make in our day. This includes our projects around the home and business. So where do you turn when your kitchen needs a facelift, or your office is replacing the coffee bar?

It’s time to consider some sustainable tile options.

The Eco-Friendly Tile Market Explodes

Over the past decade the concepts in sustainable building have boomed. And your options for eco-friendly tiles have grown exponentially.

The demand first appeared as educated consumers became increasingly aware of critical environmental issues, and the impact certain industries have on our planet and society.

New environmental regulations and the growing popularity of green building standards, like the LEED certification, caused companies to shift towards more sustainable business practices.

In the tile industry specifically, the first eco-friendly tiles appeared on the scene to increase the use of recycled materials in the manufacturing process.

Manufacturers quickly discovered that eco-friendly tile consume less energy to produce that some traditional tile methods.

Capitalizing on this smaller environmental footprint, manufacturers began using renewable energy sources, like solar or wind power, in the process of creating eco-friendly tiles. This allowed manufacturers to produce eco-friendly tiles at scale, with minimal damage to the environment.

And from that point on, tile titans across the globe quickly adopted these eco-friendly product offerings.

In 2016, the Eco-Friendly Tile Market was valued at $17.16M in 2016.

And in 2023, the eco-friendly tile market is projected to reach $37.75M, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 11.9% from 2017 to 2023!

Here at LIVDEN we are investing in the future now by adopting eco-friendly practices and products every day.

Benefits of Sustainable Tile Options

Sustainable tiles not only look great, but they are also better for the environment.

Eco-friendly tiles are more sustainable than their traditional counterparts, largely due to 3 key factors:

  • Sustainable tiles require less energy consumption
  • Sustainable tiles are more durable
  • Sustainable tiles are low maintenance

Sustainable Tiles Require Less Energy Consumption

Many eco-friendly tile options are made from recycling natural materials.

Because these tiles are made from naturally available materials, they require less energy consumption during manufacturing. Using locally sourced ingredients also cut down on post-commercial waste, lowers transportation costs, and reduces fuel consumption.

This kind of energy efficiency can lower greenhouse gas emissions (or other pollutants), decrease water use, and reduce production waste.

Sustainable Tiles Are More Durable

When compared to traditional, non-sustainable tile offerings, eco-friendly tiles are often more durable.

Durable products have a longer life cycle thus giving the environment sufficient time to fully recover any natural materials it lost in making those products in the first place.

Sustainable tile options will not need to be replaced as often. Thanks to their durability and increased life span, the raw materials, energy, and environmental repercussions attached to production can be spread out over a longer period of time.

Sustainable Tiles Are Low Maintenance

Beyond energy consumption and durability, sustainable tile options today are also more low maintenance than their traditional equivalents.

In fact, most sustainable tiles can and should be cleaned without the use of harsh chemicals or toxic products.

And the environment will thank you for going green with your cleaning methods. Using natural cleaning products means that fewer toxins from harsh cleaning products can infiltrate our ecosystems.

Our Sustainable Tile: Terrazzo

It’s true, we aren’t the first to use Terrazzo tiles.

In fact, Terrazzo has a rich history as one of the first recycled building materials. Originally Venetian workers recycled waste from processing marble slabs to create Terrazzo stone.

Today, Terrazzo is composed of naturally occurring recycled glass or plastic and cement or epoxy binders.

At LIVDEN, our Terrazzo collections utilizes a blend of post-consumer recycled glass, granite, quartz, quartzite, and pre-consumer porcelain to create a sophisticated palette with dimension and depth.

We choose to source our Terrazzo in the U.S. which means our tiles are completely U.S. made from the raw material to the finished product.

This gives us quality control and helps to ensure our sustainability standards.

The average lifespan of Terrazzo is 75 years, and we want to make sure that our product is something we feel good about in 75 years.

Benefits of Terrazzo Tiles

  • Sustainability
  • Durability
  • Non-porous (which means it does not promote bacteria and mold growth)
  • No VOCs (volatile organic compounds)
  • Low Maintenance
  • Beauty (stunning iridescent particles coexist perfectly with our unique designs)
