Our Guide to a Sustainable San Diego Summer

Have we mentioned how much we love the city of San Diego?! This season, we wanted to create a summer guide that includes local companies that practice sustainability and have ethical values. Our founders, Georgie and Hilary, were both born in Southern California and strongly believe in supporting local San Diego businesses who prioritize helping the environment. Even though Georgie and Hilary have lived in places all around the globe ranging from Moldova to Pennsylvania, their true love will always be sunny San Diego and the surrounding areas of Southern California!

That's why this year's summer guide is dedicated to their hometown. Check out their favorite small businesses to eat, drink, and shop at in San Diego

Summer Starts Now!

Starlite lounge in San Diego

If you've never been to Starlite Lounge in Downtown San Diego, make your reservation now! Not only is this spot supporting local farms and using organic ingredients, the vibe and décor is unbeatable. You may have driven past this unique-looking building on the way to the airport and wondered what's inside. Get ready for locally sourced plates and a sexy vibe!

We know, there are a lot of breweries to choose from in San Diego! But Pure Project Brewery should be at the top of your list. With 5 taprooms across San Diego county, this company's sole mission is sustainability and clean ingredients. Not only do they donate 1% of all their sales to the organization 1% for the Planet, they also source their grain from local small farms to support other California businesses. Pure Project is the perfect spot with clean ingredients, sleek interiors, and luscious greenery everywhere.

Misadventure and Co in Vista

Have you ever heard of vodka made from baked goods? Neither had we until recently! Misadventure and Co is the first and only company to distill vodka from excess baked goods that would otherwise be thrown out. And we thought upcycled tile was unique! Make sure to stop by the Vista cocktail bar for sustainable drinks and dinner while also taking a stand against food waste and growing landfills.

The Nada Shop in Encinitas

It's no secret that using plastics is not good for the environment, but did you know that it is also bad for your body? The Nada Shop is creating a solution to this problem by offering refillable body care that's safe for you and also the planet. Head to their cute shop in the heart of Encinitas to choose from dozens of plant-based and chemical-free body washes, detergents, and cleaners.

Rays Rentals in Mission Beach

We get that going out to eat and shopping sustainably can get pricey, but one of our favorite eco-conscious activities in San Diego is extremely budget-friendly! While there are many places to rent bikes from in Mission Beach, we love Ray's Rentals because it is a small family-run rental shop in the center of the action.  Renting a bike here costs you $12 for 4 hours and you will create priceless memories. Spend the day cruising around the bay and the boardwalk for fun people-watching and emission-free exercise. Our tip?  Before returning your bike, head to Sail Bay and watch the sunset from the there-you will feel like you're on vacation!

Whether you're searching for a gift for a friend or looking to update your home, we always encourage you to shop small and shop sustainable. Timshel shop was founded by two friends who source their home goods and clothing from small vendors who either handmake their goods or produce them out of recycled materials. They have something for everyone here and even deliver for free to anyone in San Diego!
